Anchoring Statement: Have it on the tip of your tongue

Anchoring Statement: Have it on the tip of your tongue

by Susan Leahy CSP

The tongue, a small but very powerful part of the body, is capable of breathing life or death into any situation. Your tongue can give you direction or it can leave you lost. The words you place on the tip of your tongue are your choice! In fact, the words that you allow your mouth to speak construct your reality. Your words set the context of your life, the life you are living right here, right now. Context is the reality you are creating through your words in your life, at home and at work.

I encourage my clients to have an Anchoring Statement on the tip of their tongue. I encourage my clients to use this powerful tool when they are in an experience that doesn't feel good. I encourage my clients to repeat, share and say their Anchoring Statement to re-energize and remind them of the context they desire to experience in their life.

In this article I am going to share with you what an Anchoring Statement is and then encourage you to create one for yourself. Lastly, I am going to ask you to keep your Anchoring Statement on the tip of your tongue, ready to use when you need love and support.

Anchoring Statements are one of the most important tools that we use in my home to set individual context. This statement is solely about the individual. To discover yours, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Who are you?

  • Really, who are you?

  • Who are you up to being?

  • What do you want to think or feel in your life?

For me, my anchor is that I am a loving, powerful, committed woman. This is who and how I want to show up in the world. Do I have moments where I fall short? Of course I do. In fact, I have a lot of moments but having this anchor available for me to use in those moments is a powerful tool to pull me back to my center so I can start making choices that are in alignment with who I am up to being. I have had a personal Anchoring Statement for over 4 years and it has been an amazing tool. In fact, I love my anchor so much that if you ever receive an email from me, it will say in my title line:

A loving, powerful, committed woman

Take a moment to do this activity with each member in your family. I did this exercise with my children when they were 4 and 6. I was curious to see if they would be able to articulate and really find words. They blew me away. They shared their words almost immediately. It was a fun and profound exercise that helped me to experience and know my children in such a different way. The night we did this exercise as a family was a wonderful and fun activity.

Complete this sentence for yourself and then have each member of your family complete the sentence for themselves.

My name is ___________________ and I am a ___________________, _____________________, ________________________ man/woman.

Next time you feel directionless, or swayed by the current of circumstance, take a moment to anchor yourself in who you are, in who you are up to being and allow your context to give you direction.
